“Enjoy whatever life brings you. You will cherish each day.”

Mayank Bhatnagar

He is a 2001 NSIT graduate. Having gained experience in the semiconductors industry, he did an MS before moving back to the industry. Here’s his story.

1.Please describe in brief your career path leading to your present position?

I got a job at Texas Instruments,Bangalore through campus placements and joined it in July 2001.I moved to S.T. Microelectronics, Noida in March 2005. In January 2007 I came to the U.S. for MS and have joined Texas Instruments in August 2008 after graduation.

2.What embarked your interest towards career in research?

With B.E. degree, I was able to do good work in my field of interest, electronics but in industry it is difficult to get time to do any research spanning a long time. This opportunity I got in my MS where I was able to work on a topic of interest.

3.What is it like working in your area of research and what are the future prospects in this direction?

I work in the field of electronic design, more precisely physical design. The opportunities are limit-less, especially if someone is technically inclined and this interests him/her.

4.How has been/was your experience at graduate school?

I went to University of Texas at Dallas for my MS. It is a great school, not very high in the ranks but cheap and good quality of education at least in the field of engineering. The infrastructure is good and the faculty is great. In addition, the experience very highly depends on choosing the correct advisor. My advisor was Prof. Poras T Balsara and he supported my work and gave all his students a free hand, which is crucial.

5.Factor(s) you consider that influenced your admission into graduate school and how supportive had N.S.I.T. been in helping you achieve your target.

The factors were GRE and TOEFL scores and previous work experience. The fact that I was from N.S.I.T. did not help a lot since all US universities recognize only IIT. The rest are all the same for them. NSIT faculty was very helpful in giving me good recommendation (Dr. Manisha Sharma) and in helping me get my transcripts (Dr. Bhatia).

6.What are the emerging fields of research that students should explore?

I can list fields in electronics and communications:

a. Carbon Nanotubes and Single Electron Devices and such other upcoming electronic devices.

b. WiMax, 3G and similar upcoming fields of research in communications.

7.Opportunities you would suggest to students interested in MS/Research?

I will suggest students to look for schools which generously offer scholarships, like UT Dallas. Try to get a teaching Assistantship or a Research Assistantship if possible. Schools that are trying to increase their rankings but are not quite there yet, have a higher probability of giving scholarships.
